Number 10. Saw (PS3, Xbox 360, Microsoft windows)
First of all let me start of by saying that this is a good game, however a part of me felt like i was playing Condemned after a while what with the thugs coming at you left right and center, however Saw had its good points, for one the traps, possibly the best part of the series (well in my opinion at least). I'm probably not the only one who spent most of my first playthrough spamming buttons to stop Detective Tapp from becoming a stain on the wall. Saw in itself was a good game from start to finish with its puzzles, quick time events and grueling combat. However as the game wore on it became your typical linear platformer, listen to jigsaw do a puzzle fight some thugs, rinse and repeat. However that complaint aside Saw: The game still holds a special place for me when i need to let off some steam.
Number 9. Alone in the Dark (PS2, PS3, Wii, Xbox 360, PC)
Whilst some of the retro gamers remember the original Alone in the Dark series, I have only been able to get my hands on the new-ish addition of the series. First off Alone in the Dark gave me rage attacks from either my lack of skills or annoyingly hard gameplay. First things first in this game your neither alone nor in the dark which is slightly annoying as i feel this shouldn't really be on a survival horror list as it filled me with rage rather than scares, however I have it on good authority from one of my besties that this game can be fun to play so it is for that reason only that i begrudgingly put Alone in the Dark on this list.
Number 8. Alan Wake (Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows)
I managed to borrow this game from one of my friends and although it had it's fair share of scares it is more of a 'psychological action thriller' as the game quotes. The game itself has a strong story line and brilliant visuals and gameplay mechanics, however its kind of annoying that the protagonist's main object is a frickin' flashlight that has a surface area of teacup which becomes awkward when facing 'nasties'. The game took me right out of my comfort zone if there's one thing i like in a game its if said game screws with my mind and keeps me on edge for days after.
Number 7. The Thing (PS2, PC, Xbox)
The Thing is the 'sequel' to the John Carpenter cult Classic of the same name, although this game came out on earlier consoles it was and still is one of my favorite games, however i found it more of a shooter than a survival horror, but because it explains the after events of the film i just had to put it on this list. The game itself starts off with something that some of the modern games lack a team, in the beginning of the game you are kitted out with a team containing a medic, engineer and a fellow soldier, which means no searching for those sparse med packs. However just when you thought it was going to be a typical shooter the thing comes along, can you trust your team anymore? what can be worse i hear you cry well if you stay outside the freezing cold will kill you, between that and the shape shifting creature this game will keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.
Number 6. Siren: Blood Curse (PS3)
Blood Curse is the re-imagining of Forbidden Siren that originally came out for the PS2. However after playing this with my mates a couple of Halloweens ago, we were pleasantly surprised to find that while it will never beat Forbidden Siren it was a good stand alone game. We all know that in horror games we never want to venture into hospitals or schools, yet in this game you have to venture into the hell hole that is the hospital, what's that? that's not so bad, well how about playing as a little girl who has no choice but to run. The game includes sight-jacking so you can see through the eyes of the Shibitos, and can i say there is nothing worse than hiding in a cupboard whilst sight-jacking to see a shibito looking directly at your hiding spot before moving on, and in that moment i swear we stopped breathing in the hopes we wouldn't be found.
Number 5. Dead Space (PS3, Xbox 360, Microsoft Windows)
I haven't played Dead Space 3 yet but after completing the first two i can't wait to see what the latest installment has to offer. Dead Space 1 takes place on the USG Ishimura, you play as Issac Clarke a faceless silent protagonist (well at least in the first game) throughout the game creatures known as necromorphs spring to life from corpses of dead crew or spring out of vents causing me no end of anxiety attacks, the game itself was fun and i'm sure i'm not the only one who enjoyed curb stomping the hell out of the necros like some sort of therapy to get over the jump scares. This game is, in my opinion, one of the best horror games and for that reason it has made it into the top 5.
Number 4. Doom 3 (Windows, Linux, Mac, Xbox, PS3, Xbox 360)
I remember playing this game for the original Xbox and loved it, so when i heard about the BFG edition for the 360 I had to get my hands on it, when i did i was not disappointed, i played it at night on my own and i honestly thought i was going to have a heart attack the graphics have been upped and to add to the bunch the monsters are faster and harder to beat not to mention the gameplay to be dark and claustrophobic, and the cherry on the cake Doom 1 and 2 have been put on, so i highly recommend this game for being a true heart stopper that will relight the love for the old favorite.
Number 3. Fatal Frame series (PS2, Xbox, Wii)
We all know that when it comes to horror no-one does it better than the Japanese, which is why the Fatal Frame series is in at number 3. I couldn't pick between the three games, I say three because the Wii edition was a remake of Crimson butterfly which in my opinion wasn't as good as the PlayStation 2 version as it's on the least scary console i mean how many horror games are there on the wii that are actually scary? anyway the fatal frame series comes in at number 3 for giving me nightmares in my college days having to make the ghosts say cheese before exorcising them.
Number 2. Resident evil 1-3 (PlayStation, Sega Saturn, Gamecube)
Now notice i only mention the first 3 games, well in my opinion these were the best games, granted the graphics weren't the best but nothing was more nail biting than playing through RE3 nemesis and seeing him chasing you, hell you weren't even safe in the loading screens. I also like the remake of RE that was brought out on Gamecube and Wii basically the same game but with the addition of a new zombie the 'crimson heads' if you don't burn the bodies after killing them they come back as faster more aggressive zombies and there is nothing more tense in life than trying to avoid a brain munching monster whilst trying to escape an enclosed room, i swear i spent more time picking myself out of zombies teeth than actually succeeding, but it was still a great game featuring the part that gave the game a cult following i belive you'll know what i mean by 'Itchy Tasty' otherwise known as the keepers diary.
Number 1. Silent Hill 2
Now while all of the silent hill games are survival horror, I believe that none of them do it better than silent hill 2 not only do you have to deal with the weird creatures as well as hell mode the town itself seems to be against you, Silent Hill 2 is probably one of the only games that i found myself having to draw up my own map because the town was screwing me over.
